Portfolio & Writing Platform
The site you’re reading — a Quarto-based portfolio and writing platform for mattgross.com.

Motivation
I wanted a home on the web that I fully own and control — somewhere to collect projects, publish writing, and be findable on my own terms. Third-party platforms are fine for distribution, but a personal domain is the only portfolio that doesn’t decay when a company pivots.
It’s also a deliberate dogfooding exercise: the site is built, designed, and deployed with the same tools and practices I write about — version-controlled, reproducible, and honest about its own state.
Scope
- Static site generation with Quarto — one toolchain for pages, blog, and future notebooks/technical posts.
- Custom editorial design — self-hosted fonts (Newsreader, Inter, JetBrains Mono), warm off-white light theme, charcoal dark theme, no frameworks beyond what Quarto ships.
- Writing platform — listing-based blog with categories, RSS feed, and OG meta tags for decent link previews.
- Deploys — GitHub Pages via a GitHub Actions workflow that renders and publishes on push to
main.
Status & roadmap
What success looks like
A site I’m not embarrassed to link in a bio, that costs almost nothing to run, that publishes a new essay with a single commit — and that reliably shows up in search results for my name within a few months.
