About

About Matt Gross — a technical product leader working at the intersection of product, data, and engineering.

I’m Matt — a technical product leader who works at the intersection of product, data, and engineering. Most of what I do comes down to one question: how do we make better decisions faster?

That usually means building analytics products people actually use, designing measurement before dashboards, and making experimentation a habit rather than an event.

What I do

  • Product leadership for data-heavy products — strategy, roadmaps, and the day-to-day judgment calls that come with technical products.
  • Analytics and measurement — deciding what to measure, making the numbers trustworthy, and getting them in front of the people who need them.
  • Experimentation and optimization — test design, guardrails, and the organizational cadence that turns isolated experiments into compounding learning.
  • Writing — I use this site to think out loud about all of the above. The writing section is where that lands.

How I work

A few principles I keep coming back to:

  1. Instrument before you optimize. Most “optimization” problems are measurement problems in disguise.
  2. Ship small, learn fast. Small, reversible changes beat big, unshippable plans.
  3. Write it down. A decision that isn’t written down doesn’t exist yet.
  4. Strong opinions, loosely held — with data to back them wherever possible.

About this site

This site is deliberately a work in progress — I’m building it in the open with Quarto and GitHub Pages, and the roadmap lives on the projects page. If something here is broken or missing, that’s honest, not careless.

The fastest way to reach me is on the contact page.
