Analytics Career Notes

Frameworks and honest advice on growing from analyst IC to technical leader.

Planned

Motivation

Career advice for analysts is dominated by two unhelpful genres: listicles (“10 skills for 2026!”) and survivorship-flavored memoirs. What’s missing is the honest middle — how the actual transitions work, what the tradeoffs are, and how to tell which path you even want.

This project grows directly out of my post Career Paths for Analysts Who Don’t Want to Manage — the response to it suggested there’s an appetite for a fuller treatment.

Scope

A growing collection of short, opinionated notes on the transitions that matter:

  • IC growth — depth, scope, influence, and ownership as the real axes of growth.
  • The manager decision — what management actually trades, and how to test-drive it before committing.
  • The technical pivot — moving from analyst to analytics engineer, data scientist, or PM without starting over.
  • Interviewing and portfolio-building — how to show judgment, not just tool fluency.

Each note takes a position — that’s the point. Advice that hedges every claim is worthless.

What success looks like

Someone a few years behind me reads a note and makes a career decision — either direction — with clearer eyes than they would have. Ambition-agnostic: the best outcome is a good fit, not a promotion.
